THE CARBON CHALLENGE

DATE: 6 MAY 2010 (THURSDAY)

TIME: 8.00 am till 10.00 am

VENUE: Meeting Room, SMK Alam Megah

The Carbon Challenge is an awareness program intended to engage students and teachers in practical strategies to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions school wide.

The Carbon Challenge can be administered by anyone your school designates to be a Carbon Challenge Team Leader, such as science, math or other teachers, administrators, or leaders of student organizations. The role of the Carbon Challenge Team Leader is to train, support and oversee the Student Challenge Team members in implementing the program at your school.

Student Carbon Challenge Team can be any interested class or group of students. Under the guidance of their Carbon Challenge Team Leader, they will learn how to conduct a classroom energy audit and use BP Carbon Calculator as measuring tool.

They will then recruit as many classrooms as possible into the Carbon Challenge, helping them measure their CO2 emissions and then developing a strategy to reduce these emissions.

Student Carbon Challenge Team monitors the progress of the participating classrooms and look for ways to motivate and inspire classrooms to achieve the greatest reductions possible.

TRADING GAME

DATE: 6 MAY 2010 (THURSDAY)

TIME: 11.00 am till 1.00 pm

VENUE: Meeting Room, SMK Alam Megah

TRADING GAME is a new resource that challenges students to engage in a simulation of real-life trading. Students work together in teams, competing to trade oil, demonstrating skills and values that can contribute towards success in business. Resources include films, news slides, a trade calculator spreadsheet, teacher notes and a trader pack.

The aim of the game is to give participants a feeling of what trading is like; the game is fast-paced, requiring trades/decisions to be made every 5 minutes.

We will be trading commodities in the game, probably oil.  In each round, we will present data on the market, quote the commodity current price, and highlight news articles.  Each team is given a trading book; with strict instructions on how much they can trade and what the maximum position they can take (short/long).  At the end of the final round they have to close out their position.  Each team is also responsible for updating their own Profit and Loss and overall position – to be handed in at the end of the game.  We will be keeping a close track on how teams are doing (teams have to log trades with us at the end of each round) – and will feedback at the end of the game on the performance of the teams, with some key metrics that we would expect.
